Puck'd is a collectible sports brand with a specific focus on hockey. The project initially began with the need to choose a random item around the house that was no wider and no longer than a standard piece of paper. After choosing our object, we were told that we now needed to create a unique packaging design + dieline for our object. The object I chose was a vintage Red Wings branded hockey puck, which led me to think about how to create packaging that reflected the item within it, without using a standard square or rectangular box dieline.

After a few hours of ideation, I had two possible solutions to how the item could be packaged. The first idea was a net design, where the puck would sit within the goal net and consumers would immediately know what kind of puck they were going to be purchasing. The second idea was a zamboni design, where the puck would be enclosed within the snow tank of the zamboni. This 'secretive' packaging design led me to consider that the overall brand could be focused on hockey collectibles, similar to sports trading cards. With trading cards, you have no idea what specific cards will be in the pack, but you always hope to get the rarest or most valuable card of all.

This same concept could be brought over to this packaging, where each package would contain a vintage or collectible hockey puck for NHL fans to collect. The zamboni design would allow for the puck to remain hidden until after purchase, when the consumer would open the zamboni to reveal the puck within it. After several attempts at assembling the dieline, it became too large to print on 11x17 paper, which led to the necessary but less than ideal decision of splitting the dieline into multiple parts.

As the design developed, so did the brand. The name 'Puck'd' was chosen to represent the item being packaged, as well as a reflection of the hardcore, gritty, and intense world of hockey. The concept of consumers "getting puck'd" after purchasing their item was also considered, and the play on a common phrase was intentional. While the tagline advertises vintage collectibles being the items sold, the brand itself is modern and updated to stand out in today's market. Additionally, despite the namesake, Puck'd doesn't limit itself to hockey pucks, and offers a wide range of NHL apparel, memorabilia, collectibles, and other sports paraphernalia.
