Linkin Park Music Poster
For this project, I was tasked with creating a music poster in a Constructivist style that featured a hand-crafted element. I immediately knew which band I was going to choose – Linkin Park – and more specifically, their song/album "One More Light."
The song One More Light calls to embrace the life that we have, especially in the darkest of times. Released in 2017, the song was repeatedly referred to as tribute to friends and loved ones of the band who had recently died. What makes this song so powerful to many is that it is relatable and emotionally moving, especially as it is the last and final song featuring Chester Bennington's (the band's lead singer) voice and lyrics. Chester committed suicide on July 20th, 2017, and what makes me feel so emotionally attached to this song is that I nearly succeeded in taking my own life just a month afterwards. I am grateful beyond words to say that those dark days of mine are over, partially in part to listening to this song on repeat every time the thoughts crossed my mind.
The process that I went through involved a series of rough sketches and several days worth of work in Photoshop. I knew I wanted to include a lightbulb as my hand-crafted element, so I sketched out various ideas on how to use the lightbulb element.
The photo off to the right is the image I took of myself holding a lightbulb, and which I manipulated in Photoshop. I removed the background, cleaned up the reflections, and really just played around with Photoshop's vast options and capabilities. To create the background and add in the text I jumped over into Illustrator, and it's the easiest for shape manipulation, and then I jumped back into Photoshop to play with layers, filters, effects, and more. Since Constructivism used a limited color palette of reds, blacks, and tans, I stuck with those three main colors and also tossed in some yellows for the lightbulb.
One thing I added was the filament within the lightbulb. I sourced the filament from another image I found online. Unfortunately, I could not find a single clear lightbulb in my entire house. Go figure. I felt like the filament would add some additional interest and help tie in the diagonal "sunburst" lines in the background.
The final design features a lightbulb covered in flames to push the idea that the "light burns within us." While listening to this song for the 4,678th time, and as a last minute addition, I edited a photo of Chester Bennington (photo credits: Stefan Brending) and as a tribute, put him within the bounds of the lightbulb. His addition into the poster is small yet mighty, and I think it really completes this project as a whole.
